Preserving the Past. Educating the Present. Inspiring Future Generations.

Douglas Ray Bruce was an American gamefowl breeder, author, educator, and historian whose lifelong involvement in the gamefowl industry grew into a mission to preserve its heritage and share generations of accumulated knowledge.

As a second-generation American gamefowl enthusiast, Douglas spent decades studying breeding, genetics, poultry health, conditioning, and the historical bloodlines that shaped the industry. His experience took him across the United States, Mexico, and the Philippines, where he encountered different breeding traditions, farming practices, and generations of knowledgeable poultrymen.

Through his published books, instructional videos, and TopSpur.TV broadcasts, Douglas transformed a lifetime of personal experience into an educational legacy accessible to enthusiasts around the world.

Born Into the Gamefowl Tradition

Douglas's journey began long before he could fully understand the world around him.

Growing up in southern Indiana, he was introduced to gamefowl through his father, Donald "Tony" Bruce, an experienced breeder whose dedication to his birds shaped Douglas's earliest memories.

As a child, Douglas watched his father work with gamefowl and listened to conversations among experienced breeders. He grew up learning about bloodlines, selective breeding, discipline, and the importance of understanding the qualities of individual birds.

His father's insistence on doing things correctly and never settling for second best became one of the foundations of Douglas's approach to breeding and education.

What began as a childhood surrounded by roosters eventually developed into a lifelong pursuit of knowledge.

The Three Men Who Shaped His Career

Throughout his writings, Douglas consistently credited three influential men with shaping his understanding of gamefowl.

Donald "Tony" Bruce — His Father and First Teacher

From his father, Douglas learned the importance of selective breeding, careful observation, and maintaining quality within a bloodline. Tony's demanding standards taught him patience, discipline, and the value of learning through practical experience.

Mike Ratliff — His Mentor in Conditioning

Douglas studied under the renowned gamefowl conditioner Mike Ratliff, attending five of his classes over approximately two decades. He also spent time living and training at Ratliff's farm in Menlo.

Their relationship grew beyond that of teacher and student into a lasting friendship.

In January 2015, Douglas accompanied Ratliff on a month-long visit to the Philippines, an experience Douglas later described as one of the most memorable journeys of his life.

H. Clayton Garrett — The Man Who Inspired His Love of History

During his late teenage years, Douglas met H. Clayton Garrett, an older breeder whose knowledge of historical gamefowl families profoundly influenced him.

Before Garrett passed away in 1990, he entrusted Douglas with an extensive collection of historical gamefowl literature, including old magazines, books, and records.

That collection helped inspire Douglas's lifelong interest in researching the origins of gamefowl bloodlines and preserving the stories of the people who developed them.

Together, these three men helped shape Douglas into a breeder, student of history, and educator.

From Experience to Education

Over the years, Douglas developed a philosophy centered on practical experience, careful observation, continued learning, and respect for traditional knowledge.

He believed that gamefowl education should not depend entirely on secrets, rumors, or information passed along without explanation.

Instead, he wanted breeders to understand the reasoning behind established practices, question misinformation, and continue learning as new information became available.

His writings frequently combined personal stories, lessons from mentors, historical research, and his own interpretations of poultry biology.

Douglas was particularly interested in explaining subjects that many enthusiasts considered difficult or poorly understood.

His ambition was not simply to share what he had learned but to make that knowledge understandable to everyday breeders.

An Author Dedicated to Preserving Knowledge

Douglas's career as an author became one of his most lasting contributions to the gamefowl community.

Through Perfect Point Media, he developed a collection of educational books addressing different aspects of gamefowl breeding, history, management, and health.

His publications included:

Perfect Point

One of Douglas's foundational works, exploring his experiences and theories surrounding gamefowl conditioning and the physiological processes associated with what the industry calls "pointing."

Breeding Basics (2020)

A practical guide to brood stock selection, breeding systems, bloodline management, and maintaining a productive breeding program. The book also honors his father, whose influence helped establish Douglas's understanding of selective breeding.

History of the Gamefowl, Volume 1 (2023)

An extensive historical research project documenting more than 100 traditional gamefowl bloodlines and the breeders associated with them.

Drawing on historical publications, records, and personal research, Douglas sought to preserve information that might otherwise disappear with time.

Last 3 Days: Mastering Point (2025)

A later work revisiting subjects introduced in Perfect Point, reflecting Douglas's continuing interest in gamefowl physiology, behavior, and the relationship between traditional practices and scientific explanations.

Fowl Fixes (2024)

A poultry-health reference addressing common bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic diseases, along with injuries, flock management, and preventive care.

Together, these publications reflect the breadth of Douglas's interests and his commitment to documenting what he had learned throughout his life.

The Voice Behind TopSpur.TV Academy

Douglas's dedication to education extended beyond the printed page.

Through TopSpur.TV Academy and the Spurred Chronicles YouTube channel, he helped create an educational platform that connected gamefowl enthusiasts across countries and generations.

Alongside his longtime friend and co-host Big Mike Fisher, Douglas brought discussions, interviews, industry news, historical stories, and personal experiences to audiences through hundreds of hours of programming.

Their broadcasts became a gathering place for people who shared an interest in gamefowl, traditional bloodlines, and the people behind the industry.

Douglas also expanded his educational work into instructional video productions, including Perfect Point, Perfect Point Master Class, Gamefowl Essentials, Rooster Hacks, and Last 3 Days: Mastering Point.

Through these projects, he was able to reach audiences far beyond those he had encountered personally during his decades in the industry.

A Historian at Heart

Among Douglas's greatest interests was preserving the history of the American gamefowl.

He understood that behind every historical bloodline was a story involving breeders, families, communities, and generations of experience.

His work on History of the Gamefowl was particularly personal.

Using historical documents, old publications, photographs, and research, Douglas attempted to reconstruct the origins of numerous traditional gamefowl families while honoring the men who developed and preserved them.

He believed that recording history was essential because future generations could learn only from the information that earlier generations took the time to preserve.

For Douglas, remembering the past was as important as educating the present.

A Legacy Beyond His Lifetime

Douglas Ray Bruce passed away on October 2, 2026, at the age of 60.

His passing marked the end of a remarkable personal journey, but not the end of the knowledge he spent his life collecting and sharing.

His books remain. His recorded lessons remain. His voice, stories, and conversations remain part of the TopSpur.TV archive.

Most importantly, his work continues to provide a connection between the older generations of gamefowl breeders who taught him and the future generations who will discover his teachings.

Douglas dedicated much of his life to learning from others, developing his own understanding, and sharing what he knew.

That commitment is the foundation of his legacy.
