For the past seven years, Big Mike has co-hosted the TopSpur TV Podcast alongside Douglas Bruce, sharing educational conversations about breeding, conditioning, farm management, poultry health, and the rich history of gamefowl. His humor, honesty, and curiosity have helped make the podcast one of the most recognized voices in the gamefowl community.
And of course, no episode feels complete without the show's signature greeting:
"How the hell are you, Big Mike?"
That simple phrase has become a tradition that longtime viewers instantly recognize.
Growing Up Around the World
Big Mike's journey began as the son of a military family. As a military brat, he spent his childhood living in several places, including Japan, before graduating from high school in Hawaii.
Experiencing different cultures at a young age gave him an appreciation for people, traditions, and lifelong learning—qualities that would later define both his military career and his passion for gamefowl.
Serving in the United States Navy
In November 1990, Big Mike enlisted in the United States Navy, beginning a career that would span 20 years.
Throughout his military service, he traveled extensively while proudly serving his country. During that time, he also owned game dogs until 2003, years before gamefowl became his primary passion.
The discipline, commitment, and work ethic he developed in the Navy continue to shape everything he does today.
Discovering the World of Gamefowl
Big Mike's first experience with gamefowl came while he was stationed in Guam. He attended numerous derbies and quickly became fascinated by the birds, the breeding programs, and the dedication of the people involved.
After retiring from the Navy in 2010, he moved directly to Cebu, Philippines. There, he spent weekends watching his brother-in-law compete and soon developed a deep appreciation for the sport. Before long, he began purchasing his own birds and learning from Florante, who introduced him to what Big Mike proudly calls the Filipino style of gamefowl breeding, conditioning, and management.
Over the years, Big Mike has participated in numerous derbies and especially enjoys hack fights, appreciating the tradition, strategy, and preparation involved where those activities are legal.
Family Comes First
Away from the podcast and the farm, Big Mike is a devoted husband and proud father of three sons.
His family remains his greatest priority, and the same values that guided his military service—integrity, dedication, and loyalty—continue to guide his personal life today.
